“Technology and agility – a key for post-COVID recovery”
The following article has been kindly shared by our strategic partner, Global Hospitality Partners
The global COVID-19 pandemic has thankfully dissipated in many locations and with the steady progress of mass vaccinations which has enabled the reopening of borders and the easing of travel restrictions, businesses and individuals are now regaining confidence to start travelling again.
The new normal
Positive signs of recovery including growth in hotel occupancy, online searches and bookings, airline passengers’ numbers, live industry and sports events (with both Wimbledon singles finals planned to be played in front of full capacity audience), have been encouraging for hoteliers as they reopen and prepare for the “new normal”.
As to the “new normal” and hotels’ business mix; there is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the business mix, particularly for hotels focussed on the corporate market. We are witnessing different speeds of recovery across the three key segments. With many travellers choosing to stay closer to home domestic leisure business is having a higher impact on hotel occupancy and performance in the short term, followed by domestic corporate. Although immediate international opportunities from the corporate and MICE segments are more limited at present, the time and effort hotels invest now in these segments will ensure a quicker and steeper recovery in the future. Hotels need to plan and act now, especially with the RFP season already under way for 2022 and beyond.
